Elizabeth Lapointe appointed ISFHWE Director

The following announcement was sent by George G. Morgan, President of the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors (ISFHWE):

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Lapointe as the new Director - International/At Large effective immediately. Elizabeth replaces Sandra Devlin who resigned earlier this fall due to health issues. Elizabeth will serve the remainder of this year's term for Sandra and will stand for election in the spring of 2006.

Lucky Stars and Gold Bars - One Soldier. Four Hundred Letters

An historical look at WWII through the eyes of one soldier has been documented in Lucky Stars and Gold Bars: A World War II Odyssey. Karen Sladek, the daughter of the letter-writing GI, Lt. Lyle Sladek, provides a historical collection of letters, photos, and documents that not only recount the hard days of fighting and the long, lonely nights away from home, but they also helped to give Karen a new glimpse into her father, "Dad never really talked about the war, I knew he was there but that was about it. Then one day I happened on these letters and I was immediately drawn into his world and the people he fought with. It was an amazing experience."

Hayes Center offers beginner's genealogy class

The Hayes Presidential Center in Femont, Ohio will be offering a beginner genealogy class from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 14 in the center's library. 2006 Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy

The 2006 Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy will be held Jan. 9-13 in Salt Lake City. This year's event will offer courses on Scottish and Eastern European research, as well as U.S. research.

Durham Records Online adds matching service, reduces prices

Durham Records Online, a website with over 1.6 million searchable census and parish records of County Durham, England, has added several new features and has sharply reduced their prices for the holidays.

Texas Library Offers Book on Civil War Genealogy

A new genealogical volume devoted to Van Zandt County, Texas Civil War veterans is available at the Library of Genealogy and Local History in Canton's courthouse annex.

The spiral-bound softcover book features nearly 300 pages of records, family histories, photographs and other information about Civil War veterans who lived in Van Zandt County. The book costs $25, with proceeds used to support the volunteer-operated genealogy and history library.

National Genealogical Society Names Two to Board of Directors

Arlington, Va. – At its most recent board meeting, the National Genealogical Society approved the addition of two members to its Board of Directors.

GRAMPS 2.0.9 "Nobody expects the Spanish inquisition!" has been released

The GRAMPS project is proud to announce the 2.0.9 ("Nobody expects the Spanish inquisition!") release of GRAMPS for Linux and UNIX. The release can be downloaded from the GRAMPS SourceForge site at http://sourceforge.net/projects/gramps

This release adds many incremental improvements throughout the whole program. This includes command line, document generators, reports, tools, filters, graphical user interface responsiveness, web site generator, import and export, and many other areas with new features and bug fixes.
