Provo, Utah (January 24, 2006) – The Computer Science Department of Brigham Young University announced today that it will hold its Sixth Annual Workshop on Technology for Family History and Genealogical Research. The day-long workshop will take place on March 9, 2006 in the BYU Conference Center, 770 East University Parkway, Provo, Utah.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Peter Norvig, Director of Machine Learning, Search Quality and Research at Google, Inc. His topic will be, “The Future of Search.” Dr. Norvig has been at Google since 2001. He is a Fellow of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence and co-author of Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, the leading textbook in the field. Previously he was the senior computer scientist as NASA and head of the 200-person Computational Sciences Division at Ames Research Center. He received his B.S. in Applied Mathematics from Brown University and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley. He has been a professor at the University of Southern California and a Research Faculty Member at Berkeley.
In his address, Dr. Norvig will take a look at the trends and future direction in search. He will also discuss the advances in technology and research which will be key to the ongoing development of better search techniques for many fields, including genealogy and family history.
The workshop provides a forum for presenting and discussing current and emerging research work on technology that supports family history and genealogy. The workshop is open to all who enjoy presenting and learning about emerging technological research, as it applies to genealogy. Especially invited are those who do research and publish in the areas of informatics and computer science. The format of the conference will include a keynote speaker, luncheon speaker, morning and afternoon technical presentations, and a panel discussion.
Pre-registration is encouraged and the cost is $60 per person. Full-time students can register at the discounted rate of $38, with current ID. The registration includes a printed syllabus and DVD recording of the proceedings, along with a continental breakfast, catered lunch, and afternoon snacks.
