Beginning 1 January 2006 you are invited to submit lecture proposals for the 2007 Conference-in-the-States to be held 16-19 May 2007 in Richmond, Virginia. The mother of eight presidents and the funnel through which early north-south and east-west migration passed, Virginia's place in the early and later history of America is well established. The birthplace of religious freedom, she was home to early Quakers, Lutherans, Moravians, Huguenots, Baptists and Presbyterians in addition to Anglicans. Her early citizenry drawn from a variety of ethnicities including African, English, German and Scots-Irish carried their heritage with them as they moved from Virginia southward and westward. This migration will be one of the major focuses of the conference.
Among the topics being considered are lectures on the history, records, repositories and ethnic and religious groups of Virginia and neighboring states with special emphasis on migrations into, within and out of the region and the origins of the early settlers. Other regional topics of interest include land and military records, colonial handwriting, federal records and the law as it relates to genealogy. Proposals are also solicited for the broader genealogical topics including methodology, problem solving, the use of technology, genetics and family health history, and adoption and other 20th-century research topics.
Sessions are generally limited to one hour. Camera-ready handout material, due in 2007, is required for each lecture or workshop presentation and will be included in the syllabus distributed to all conference registrants.
Proposals should include the following information:
- Title of the presentation and a brief but comprehensive outline
- Short summary of the lecture for the program brochure. The word count of title plus description should not exceed forty words.
- Identification of the audience level: beginner, intermediate, or advanced.
- Overhead or slide projectors will be provided by NGS; speakers requiring digital projectors must provide their own.
- Speaker's full name, address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address.
- Brief speaker biography (two or three sentences).
- Résumé of recent lectures the speaker has given. Those who have not spoken previously at a regional or national conference are encouraged to submit an audio tape or videocassette of a recent lecture.
Speakers may submit any number of proposals. We have made the online submission process easier this year with the addition of a speaker look-up field. When you go through to submit your proposal, if you have submitted in a previous year type in your name in the Speaker Lookup section at the top of the page - your information will automatically be inserted - saving you the trouble of re-entering. NGS members will be given first consideration as speakers. Lecturers will receive compensation based on the number of lectures given. Complimentary conference registration and publications are also included. Interested individuals can submit proposals online through the NGS Web site: https://www.eshow2000.com/ngs/2007/call_for_papers.cfm
