Throughout East Tennessee, there are individuals and organizations hard at work to preserve, interpret, and promote the rich heritage of this region. For two decades, the East Tennessee Historical Society has rewarded those efforts with presentations of the ETHS Awards of Excellence. Past award winners have included high school teachers and students, Girl Scouts, college professors, community preservationists, authors, and media personalities. The public is invited to help identify the 2006 nominees of these prestigious awards by submitting nominations for the 23rd Annual ETHS Awards of Excellence.
The awards, to be presented at the historical society's annual meeting in May, are given to individuals and organizations with outstanding contributions in the fields of teaching, media, preservation, publishing, and lifetime achievement.
Nominations are sought by the historical society through April 3, 2006. Nominated projects should have been completed between 2004 and 2006. Organizations and individuals are invited to make nominations in the following categories:
Teaching Excellence: outstanding or innovative teaching of history at any level, from grammar school through college and adult education. Past winners have included school teachers, college professors, the Tanasi Girl Scouts Council, and national park interpreters.History in the Media: in recognition of excellence in the promotion, preservation, or interpretation of history by an individual or organization through writing, production, performance, or the Internet.
Award of Distinction: awarded to either an individual or organization for publishing, preservation, or programming. Past winners have included community museums, heritage festivals, neighborhood preservationists, local authors, landmark and cemetery preservation projects, local authors, and community history projects.
Ramsey Award: awarded to an individual for lifetime achievement in history.
