CLINTON, IA - Friends of the Clinton Public Library present The Colorful Past of Schleswig-Holstein on Saturday, April 22, at the Clinton Community College auditorium. This free event is sponsored by Friends of the Clinton Public Library, Clinton Community College with additional funding by ASHHS - Endowment Fund, and Dr. Jurgen Holl.
Special guest for the program is Professor Doctor Klaus Timm of Wentorf (Schleswig-Holstein). Professor Dr. Timm earned his Ph.D. in Engineering and was Professor for Electrical Engineering at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of German Armed Forces, Hamburg, for 30 years. More than 100 ancestors of Dr. Timm emigrated to the United States. His special interest is genealogy.
Dr. Timm will speak on three themes of Schleswig-Holstein history:
Churches in the Country of Schleswig-Holstein - Hundreds of old churches are famous landmarks of the scenery of Schleswig-Holstein and form the heart of towns and cities in that region. We will visit some Middle Age buildings and see the richness of the treasures inside.
Northfriesland and the Whale Fishing Period - From the middle of the 17th until the beginning of the 19th century, nearly all male Northfrisians worked on whalers as commanders, officers or sailors. This period is known as the "Golden Age" of Northfriesland's history.
The Vikings Came Back - During the "Viking epoch" from 800 - 1100, Scandinavians appeared on the European scene. With their famous ships they occupied great areas of Europe, destroyed many towns and explored new countries like Greenland and North America. Haithabu, located near the city of Schleswig, was one of the greatest Viking towns where traders and workmen lived.
