The International Society of Family History Writers and Editors (ISFHWE) is pleased to announce the establishment of the Myra Vanderpool Gormley Award of Merit to recognize excellence in leadership and accomplishment in the field of genealogical writing, editing, and publishing. The award is named for Myra Vanderpool Gormley, a world-renowned genealogist, whose career began in the late 1980s and early 1990s with her involvement in both General Electric's GEnie online service and Prodigy.
Her weekly column, Shaking Your Family Tree, was a smash success and was syndicated by the Los Angeles Times. In the succeeding years, she co-authored (with Julie Case) the RootsWeb Review, which premiered on 17 June 1998. She has written innumerable articles in newsletters, journals, magazines, and on the Internet in Web pages, mailing lists, and other electronic media. She also has served as mailing list administrator at RootsWeb.com, and as Webmaster for a number of sites.
Ms. Gormley was a founding member of the Council of Genealogy Columnists (later renamed the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors), and has held key positions in a number of genealogical societies and other organizations. Throughout the years, she has selflessly volunteered her time to benefit other genealogists, whether through her writing or through providing writing and publishing advice and mentoring developing authors.
The Myra Vanderpool Gormley Award of Merit was established to recognize the qualities that Myra has exemplified throughout her career and continues to share with others.
The Myra Vanderpool Gormley Award of Merit will be presented to the first recipient at the ISFHWE Gala Awards Banquet to be held on Thursday evening, 8 June 2006, at the National Genealogical Society's 2006 Conference in the States in Chicago, Illinois. The banquet will also be the occasion for the awarding of prizes in ISFHWE's prestigious annual Excellence-in-Writing Competition.
