KNOXVILLE, TN (July 7, 2006) The East Tennessee Historical Society is proud to host a Brown Bag Lecture “A Heroic Struggle: Civil War Medicine and Modern Warfare,” presented by Dr. Anthony Hodges on Wednesday, July 12 at noon. Armies of the American Civil War were able to bring to the battlefield a deadly ability to kill and maim their enemies in unprecedented numbers. Unfortunately for the average soldier, medical practices had not advanced at the same rate. Doctors and surgeons of both the Union and Confederate armies were often overwhelmed with unprecedented casualty rates and rampant diseases. Dr. Anthony Hodges of Chattanooga has conducted extensive research into the means by which the medical staffs of both armies were able to cope with these demands and the surprising degree to which they were successful.
