ProQuest celebrates the 10th anniversary of Literature Online through a new partnership with Oxford University Press

Ann Arbor, Mich. – November 28, 2006 –Literature Online, the world's leading academic full-text and reference resource for English-language literature, marks its 10th anniversary in December. Doubling the importance of the milestone, ProQuest’s Chadwyck-Healey unit is enhancing the resource by including search results from more than thirty literary reference titles from Oxford Reference Online's Premium and Literature collections published by Oxford University Press.  Also, subscribers to both Literature Online and Oxford Reference Online can access the full-text of entries within Oxford Reference Online.

Old Harp Singing at East Tennessee Historical Society December 2

KNOXVILLE, TN (November 22, 2006)  Begin the holiday festivities at the East Tennessee Historical Society with a potluck dinner and an afternoon of Old Harp Singing on Saturday, December 2.  Old Harp, or shape note, once filled a need in a time and place where musical instruments were costly and hard to come by.  It is a method whereby each note on the scale is given a shape, allowing singers to learn the music without musical instruments.  Pure and meant for congregational singing, this nineteenth century music enjoyed widespread popularity, especially in churches in the rural Appalachian South.

Tour to explore the “Undiscovered Britain”—the Border Reiver Country of Scotland and England

The following announcement was written by the East Tennessee Historical Society:

KNOXVILLE, TN (November 20, 2006)  A tour sponsored by the East Tennessee Historical Society will explore the “Undiscovered Britain”—the Scottish Lowlands and northern England, May 9-22, 2007.  Largely untouristed, this scenic and historic land was also the home of the famous Border Reiver clans, who for centuries fought and foraged across the border.  The Ogles, Armstrongs, Scotts, Crosers, Kerrs, Forsters, Grahams, Maxwells, Johnstons, Bells, Robsons, Grays, Herons, Milburns, Ridleys, Elliots, Nixons, Olivers, Youngs, Rutherfords, and Douglasses are among the families from the border area whose  descendants eventually settled in East Tennessee.
