Genealogist and Computer Guru Stephen Morse to Lecture in Massachusetts

Pittsfield, MA.  . . . The Friends of the National Archives will host two lectures by nationally-known genealogist and computer guru Stephen Morse on Monday, October 23, 2006 at the National Archives facility, 10 Conte Drive in Pittsfield.

Mr. Morse is an amateur genealogist who has been researching his Russian-Jewish origins for the past few years.  Several years ago, he developed some web-based searching aids which, much to his surprise, have attracted attention worldwide.  He has received both the Outstanding Contribution Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies.

KNOXVILLE, TN (October 12, 2006)  On Friday, October 27, the East Tennessee Historical Society will sponsor “A Tribute to Cas Walker,” featuring recently discovered film clips and vintage film footage from his varied career as a Knoxville businessman, politician, and TV host.  Loved by many, derided by others, Walker was a major force in local business and politics.  Hundreds of local musicians, such as Dolly Parton, got a start to stardom on his long-running “Cas Walker’s Farm and Home Hour.” The program is produced by Brad Reeves and Loiusa Trott of the Tennessee Archives of Moving Image and Sound and is sponsored by Dollywood and WDVX Radio.

The Board for Certification of Genealogists is pleased to announce the newest certified genealogists.

Jean M. Wilcox Hibben, CG, of Lake Matthews, California, is a full-time genealogist and former speech professor. She received her MA in Speech Communication and is a current doctoral candidate with a major in folklore. Hibben specializes in research through family stories and folklore. She has attended national and local genealogy conferences and institutes. Hibben contributes to the Corona (CA) Genealogy Society’s newsletter and the Jurupa (CA) Family History Center’s online newsletter. She is member of the Genealogical Speaker’s Guild. Maria (Ree) Pratt Hopper, CG, of Montvale, New Jersey, is a retired teacher with over 25 years of genealogical research experience. She is the Historian for the Borough of Montvale, New Jersey. Hopper is Past-President of the Genealogical Society of Bergen County, New Jersey. She compiled “Hopper Family Genealogy: Descendants of Andries Willemszen Hoppe(n) of New Amsterdam, 1651-1658 -- The First Six Generations.” Her geographic specialty includes the mid-Atlantic, New Jersey, and New York. ETHS Presents Brown Bag: Second Generation: Inheritors of Kaddish, October 4

KNOXVILLE, TN (September 28, 2006)  The process of inheritance is an ancient custom that has been observed by nearly every culture in history.  Of course, most tend to think of inheritance as money, land, or other worldly possessions left behind by friends and relatives; however, for second generation Holocaust survivors, it is the experience of this horrible and chaotic time in history that is bequeathed to these individuals by their parents.  The Brown Bag Lecture Series presented by the East Tennessee Historical Society continues on October 4, at noon, with Second Generation: Inheritors of Kaddish led by Rabbi Louis Zivic.

Author to discuss new book: The Seduction of Miss Evelyn Hazen

In 1934, Knoxville socialite Evelyn Hazen came to national attention when she sued her lover, local businessman Ralph Scharringhaus, for seduction and breach of promise.  Jane Van Ryan, author of a new book, The Seduction of Miss Evelyn Hazen, will be at the East Tennessee Historical Society at 7 p.m., September 19, to discuss the couple’s turbulent relationship and the ensuring trial.  Van Ryan delves into newspaper and magazine accounts of the day, as well as into Miss Hazen’s explicit (at least for the time), shockingly frank court testimony, to weave a story of the scandal that rocked Knoxville.   

Rare Footage, Unseen for Decades . . . East Tennessee Historical Society Presents the Motion Picture Films of Jim Thompson

KNOXVILLE, TN (September 11, 2006) Renowned and revered as one of Knoxville's most famous commercial photographers, Jim Thompson also made motion pictures.  Special clips from the Thompson collection have been put together by Bradley Reeves and Louisa Trott of Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound.  This will be the first public showing of some of these clips.  Included in this unique and exciting showing are some of the first home movies ever made (1915), Gay Street parades (including FDR's visit), historic downtown footage, a vintage 1930s UT Vols football game clip, 1920s/30s Smoky Mountain Hiking Club trips, Sen. Lawrence Tyson at Tyson House, and much more.
